Inspired by the archaeological findings at Herculaneum and Pompeii, Neoclassicism quickly dominated European design. A prime example of this style can be seen on a citywide scale in nineteenth-century Berlin and through the work of Karl Friedrich Schinkel (1781-1841), Europe’s great proponent of the Neoclassical movement. One of the most prominent architects of nineteenth-century Germany, Schinkel was also a noted city planner, a designer of furniture and decorative arts, an interior decorator, a painter, and a designer of stage sets. Based on his 2016 heritage tour, Curt DiCamillo with lead us on a virtual tour of Neoclassical Berlin and its environs. From great palaces and treasure houses to national museums and concert halls, learn how the style came to be equated with prestige, importance, and power.
