About
Consultations let you discuss the topic(s) of your choosing with one of the experts at American Ancestors. Popular topics include breaking down brick walls, interpreting DNA test results, applying to lineage societies, and dual citizenship by descent. Consultations are also great for tackling new software, assembling family trees, and getting a second pair of eyes to review your research.
Scheduling
After purchasing a consultation, you will receive a form to indicate your preferred dates, topics, and more. You will also be able to share any files and family trees which may be of use during your consultation. Upon review, the expert best suited to your needs will reach out to introduce themselves and confirm the details of your appointment. Please note that we require a minimum of two weeks between the submission of this form and the earliest requested date.

Gifts
Give the gift of family history to a friend or loved one! Upon purchase, you will receive a form to schedule the digital delivery of your gift. When that form is completed, your gift will be delivered to its recipient on the date and time of your choice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my consultant perform research for me?
Consultations from American Ancestors consist only of the time spent and work completed between during timed sessions, plus incidental preparation by the consultant in advance of the session. To learn about hiring a researcher from American Ancestors, click here.
How much time will I need?
While one hour is sufficient for most discussions, more time can be helpful. If we think you'll need more or less time based on your submission, we'll reach out to let you know.
Can I extend my session if I need more time?
Our genealogists have busy schedules. As a result, we are unable to guarantee time beyond that initially agreed upon. Impromptu extensions agreed upon mid-consultation must be paid for by the minute according to an invoice sent shortly after the consultation's completion.
Is there a physical component to gift consultations?
At the moment, we do not offer a physical card or certificate to accompany gift consultations.
How can I redeem my complimentary consultation?
Members at the Contributing Friend level or higher may contact consultations@americanancestors.org to redeem their complimentary consultation. We'll verify your eligibility and provide you with a redemption link as soon as possible.
