Our Honoree

William M. Fowler, Jr.

William M. Fowler Jr.

Renowned historian and biographer William M. Fowler Jr. retired in 2017 as Distinguished Professor of History at Northeastern University. He is also former executive director of the Massachusetts Historical Society, and past Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the New England Historic Genealogical Society.

He is the former editor of The New England Quarterly, and his books include Rebels Under Sail: The Navy in the Revolution and The Baron of Beacon Hill: A Biography of John Hancock. His most recent book is Steam Titans (2017), the story of the epic competition between shipping magnates Samuel Cunard and Edward Collins for mid-19th century control of the Atlantic.

He is a Fellow of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the Pilgrim Society, and received an honorary degree from Northeastern University in 2000.
