A Thorndike Family History: Descendants of John and Elizabeth (Stratton) Thorndike

Edited by Scott C. Steward and John Bradley Arthaud

Forty years have passed since the publication of Morgan Hewitt Stafford's Descendants of John Thorndike of Essex County, Massachusetts.  For this completely revised genealogy, Scott C. Steward and John Bradley Arthaud re-examined numerous primary sources, including all early Essex County deeds, to bring the work up to twenty-first century scholarly standards. Additionally, Steward presents new scholarship on the Thorndike family origin in England.

The name of Thorndike is distinctive.  All early people of the name in New England, and probably the majority of people in America today bearing the surname, trace to John (1) Thorndike.

The Gods of the Hills: Piety and Society in Nineteenth-Century Vermont

    By T.D. Seymour Bassett

This new book offers a comprehensive examination of the varieties of religious experience that flourished in Vermont up to the modern era, including those of the Mormons, Catholics, Episcopalians, Congregationalists, Methodists, Baptists, Jews and the un-churched majority who were bound with the rest of the people in a powerful civil religion loyal to town, state, and country.

“Much more than a dry discussion of religious doctrine, this magisterial volume sparkles with cogent analysis and insightful  discussion of the main themes of Vermont social history from the 1750s to 1900.  Its permanent place on the shelf of important Vermont books is assured.” - J. Kevin Graffagnino, former curator of  Special Collections at the University of Vermont’s Bailey/Howe Library.

Vermont Historical Society. 2000. 324pp. Softcover.

Graven Images: New England Stonecarving and Its Symbols, 1650-1815

    By Allan I. Ludwig

This carefully researched, beautifully illustrated work was the first to consider gravestone art in depth. It has been reissued with a new preface outlining changes in the field since the book first appeared.

Wesleyan University Press. 1966, repr. 2000. 514pp. Softcover.
