SALE!  Yankee Correspondence: Civil War Letters Between New England Soldiers and the Home Front
Edited by Nina Silber and Mary Beth Sievens

The Civil War “unleashed a veritable onslaught on the U.S. postal system,” writes Nina Silber in her introduction.  These letters between New England soldiers and their families-many published for the first time-speak of the war’s hardships, especially of frustrations with the army, suffering at home, and government policies.  Grouped in six major themes (the military experience; what the war meant; views of the South; politics on the home front; personal sacrifices of war; and correspondence of one family), these letters are published verbatim and echo with the voices of ordinary people caught up in history.

    By Peter R. Knights

This book reconstructs important milestones in the lives of 2,808 white native-born men who resided in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1860 or 1870.  Selected systematically from the census for those years, these men represent two cross sections of “typical” Bostonians.  Using a broad array of sources-manuscript census returns; tax assessments; city directories; birth, marriage, and death records from more than twenty states; cemetery records; newspapers; and family genealogies-Knights traces these men back to their origins in hundreds of New England towns.  He writes on changes in their occupations and wealth before and after they arrived in Boston, the fates of their marriages, their children, and, in all but seventy cases, their deaths and causes of death.
