NGS Conference in the States
Providence, Rhode Island, May 31-June 3, 2000
The National Genealogical Society conference in Providence is less than two weeks away! This national conference will feature four days of lectures, computer labs and demos, and an exhibit hall filled with genealogical books, CD-ROMs and other products. The conference will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in downtown Providence. There are still hotel rooms available at the Days Hotel in Providence (401-272-5577). A shuttle bus will go between this hotel and the convention center so it will be convenient for conference attendees.
The New England Historic Genealogical Society will have an active role in the NGS conference. A number of speakers from NEHGS will be giving lectures, including Robert Charles Anderson, F.A.S.G., Michael Caito, Ralph J. Crandall, David C. Dearborn, Jane Fletcher Fiske, F.A.S.G., Michael J. Leclerc, Gary Boyd Roberts, George F. Sanborn, Jr., F.A.S.G. and D. Brenton Simons,
We also invite you to stop by and visit with the NEHGS staff at our exhibit booth. Demos of our website, www.NewEnglandAncestors.org will be given and librarians will be available to answer questions that you might have about the Society’s holdings. Representatives from the membership office will detail the benefits of NEHGS membership, and will explain how to use Society services, such as the Circulating Library and the QuickSearch service. A member of the staff will give a formal presentation of Society services and programs each day at 1:00 and 1:30 in the exhibit space.
The Society Sales Department will also be on hand with a wide selection of NEHGS publications, as well as books and CD-ROMs from other publishers. This is your chance to browse through copies of our latest publications, such as the Plantagenet Ancestry of Seventeenth Century Colonists, 2nd edition, and The Genealogist’s Handbook for New England Research, 4th edition. If you want to make sure that we bring a particular book, please call the Sales Department at 1-888-296-3447 prior to the conference.
We will also be featuring several author book signings. Marcia Melnyk, author of The Genealogist’s Handbook for New England Research, will be signing copies of that work, as well as her brand-new book, The Weekend Genealogist: Time-Saving Techniques for Effective Research on Wednesday, May 31st, from 1:30 to 2:30pm. Also on Wednesday, from 3:00 - 3:30pm, Sharon DeBartolo Carmack, C.G., will be signing copies of her popular books, including Organizing Your Family History Research and A Genealogist’s Guide to Discovering Your Female Ancestors. On Thursday, June 1st, from 2:00-2:30pm, Maureen Taylor will be signing copies of her books, Uncovering Your Ancestry through Family Photographs and Through the Eyes of Your Ancestors. We hope to add more authors to our schedule so please stop by the booth and check for the latest information.
NEHGS member ribbons will be available at the Society exhibit booth. Identifying yourself as an NEHGS member is a wonderful way to meet other members with similar interests, and your ribbon will help us spread the word about the Society.
The exhibit hall is free and open to the public. The hours for the exhibit hall are as follows:
