    The NEXUS is pleased to present below a treatment of the descendants of John Putnam. who came to America in 1634, documented in the book A History of the Putnam Family in England and America, by Miss Sherburne’s ancestor Eben Putnam.  We invite any member who wishes to update other 19th century genealogies, i.e., to select a few individuals who were children when the genealogies were published and cover all of their descendants to the present day, to submit their research (documented!) to the NEXUS.

    Readers may refer to Eben Putnam’s A History of the Putnam Family in England and America (Salem. Mass.: The Salem Press, 1891).  Both Eben Putnam and Jamie Sherburne are descendants of John Putnam. immigrant to Salem. Massachusetts, ca. 1634.

    1.  BAILEY6 PUTNAM (Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), b. at Charlestown, N.H., 13 May 1770; d. 17 April 1827; m. (1) 5 March 1795 LAURA ANNA [27] BAILEY; m. (2) JERUSHA SPENCER, dau. of Joseph & Lucy Spencer, of Charlestown, N.H.  Bailey was a shoemaker by trade. (See Eben Putnam. p. 265).

    2.  HIRAM7 PUTNAM (Bailey6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1) , b. at Charlestown, N.H., 27 Mar. 1798; d. 7 December 1874; m. 9 Oct. 1836 LAURA EMELINE RICE, b. 12 July 1812; d. 28 April 1883. Hiram was a farmer. Laura was a school teacher.

                      Malvina Victoria, b. 25 Oct. 1839; d. 2 March 1906, unm. Certified teacher in Jackson Co., owned a cattle ranch in Montana. Bur. at Kalamazoo, Mich.

                      Hiram Lycurgas Fabious, b. 7 Oct. 1842; d. 18 Nov. 1869 of T. B., unm.

                      Amy Ann, b. 20 Sept. 1844; d. 18 Feb. 1876; m. 27 Sept. 1870 Benjamin Franklin Lawrence.

                      Mary Elizabeth, b. 1 Jan. 1847; d. 21 Jan. 1920; m. 25 Dec. Joseph Edward Brown.

                      ____, b. 24 March 1850; d. 11 April 1850.

    3.  LAURA EMELINE8 PUTNAM (Hiram7, Bailey6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), b. in Jackson Co., Michigan, 11 Jan. 1838; d. at Leoni, Mich., 30 April 1920; m. 28 May 1863 HORACE LEE COYKENDALL, b. at Springwater, N.Y., son of Daniel & Louisa Coykendall.  Horace was a farmer. Bought land from the government and built a big farmhouse in Alamo, Mich., where he died 5 Oct. 1912. Laura was a certified teacher in Washtenaw Co., Mich.

    4.  ETTA LAURA COYKENDALL9 (Laura8 Putnam. Hiram7, Baiky6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), born in Jackson Co., Michigan, 28 Jan. 1864; died at Grants Pass, Oregon, 1937, bur. at Alamo, Mich.; married at Alamo, 20 Sept. 1882 FOSTER LEROY DEAL, b. at Varick, Seneca Co., New York, 1859; d. at Alamo, Michigan, 1927, son of Samuel Byron and Roxanna (Williams) Deal.  Ettie was in Grants Pass, Oregon, with her granddaughter, Dorothy Mae Deal, to visit her son Lee Lynn and his family, when she caught a virus and died suddenly.  Foster was a farmer.

Hiram7, Bailey6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), b. at Kalamazoo, Michigan, 9 June 1883; died at Berkeley, California, 13 May 1953; m. at Montesano, Calif., 25 Dec. 1917, PEARL DORETTA CARTER, b. at Montesano, 4 Jan. 1892, dau. of Charles Fredrick and Devonia May (Hall) Carter. She resides presently (1985) in Concord, California.  Lee Lynn was a business teacher and a coach.  He signed his name “L. Lynn Deal.”

                      Douglas Duane, b. at Tacoma, Wash., 1924; m. (1)            at Berkeley, Calif., Maude Ellen Harris; m. (2)at Concord, Calif., Carol Shirley Roberts. Duane works for the railroad company.

Hiram7, Bailey6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), born at Williams, Mich., 10 Sept. 1885; d. at Bloomingdale, Mich., 28 Oct. 1939 of a heart attack; m. at Gobles, Mich., 28 Aug. 1907 GLADYS GERTRUDE GRAHAM, b. at Gobles, 24 Sept. 1887, d. at Boca Raton, Fla., 10 Jan. 1959, of cancer, dau. of Louis Orley and Caroline Francis (Hinckley) Graham. Both are buried in Alamo, Michigan, with their infant son.  Koli was an agent for the New York Central R.R., and Gladys was a relief operator.

    7.  ARLIE LAURA DEAL10 (Etta Coykendall9, Laura8 Putnam. Hiram7, Bailey6, Timothy5, Seth4, Thomas3-2, John1), b. at Williams, Michigan, 4 July 1888; d. at Jacksonville, Florida, 26 March 1965; m. (1) at Williams, 19 January 1907 FRED SCHORNO GRANGER, son of Charles Granger.  Fred was a dentist; Arlie was a secretary.  She married three more times after Fred died of typhoid fever; (2) HARRY ARTZ; (3) RAY DICKSON; (4) 1957 ALBERT REID.

                      Fred Schorno, Jr., b. at Williams, 23 Oct. 1907; d. at Jacksonville, Florida, 1980; m. at Jacksonville, 1 Dec. Theda Maxine Evans. He was a police detective.
