  • Gravestone of Dorothy Cromwell, Salem Massachusetts

  • We discovered this photograph of the oldest headstone in Salem Cemetery — that of Dorothy Cromwell, who died September 27, 1673 — among the several photo books of Massachusetts gravestones in the Harriette Forbes Collection (call number SL 111 8) at NEHGS. The writing under the photo reads: "Dorothy Cromwell died September 27, 1673. Her stone was peeled off by the boys 'to make a witch.'"
