I have a great grandfather who enlisted as a private in the 17th Vermont Infantry in August of 1864, despite being Canadian. I've been told it was not uncommon for an American (or a town?) to pay a "bounty" (I was told $300) for someone to take their place. He served until July of 1865. I'd like to find out more about this practice, and especially any other documentation regarding his involvement. His name was James Frazier, and he enlisted in Brattleboro or Arlington, VT, and I believe was discharged in Burlington.
