My research has HIT THE BRICK WALL

I am a direct descendant of Asaph Mansfield, bn. 1818 in Chelmford, MA, son of Joel Mansfield and Rebeccah Coggswell.  I find no public record of birth for Joel Mansfield; no date, place or parent names.

Joel Mansfield (married Rebeccah Coggswell of Westford, MA 1815)

Lived in Bedford, MA and possibly Chelmsford, MA

Chelmsford vital records (death) list 2 persons by this name

                    Joel #1 died 1813 @ 28 yrs of age.

                    Joel #2 died 1826 @ 39 yrs of age.

There is a John Mansfield of Chelmsford, MA (married Lois Corey in 1760)

He died in Chelmsford in 1814 @ age 80.

John Mansfield's will (dated 1814 in Chelmsford) mentions a son Joel.

However, a search for the children of John and Lois Mansfield of Chelmsford

lists 10 children, BUT NO JOEL.

WHAT WOULD EXPLAIN THE MISSING BIRTH RECORD FOR JOEL MANSFIELD?

COULD "JOEL" BE A NICKNAME OR MIDDLE NAME AND NOT HIS GIVEN BIRTH NAME?

WHAT OTHER SOURCES MIGHT I SEARCH TO IDENTIFY THE PARENTS OF JOEL, FATHER OF MY ANCESTOR ASAPH MANSFIELD?

ANY GUIDANCE ON WHERE TO LOOK NEXT WOULD BE MOST APPRECIATED.
