If I am wanting to order a probate record through NEHGS there is a line requiring a record number. What if I only have the name of the person and date of death. How do I order a probate record without a record number?

The "record number" would probably be either a docket number or volume and page numbers in the docket books. Docket numbers can be found for many counties in published probate indices. What are the county, name and date?

Susan (Riley) Bailey died June 5 1871 Boston, MA.
The obituary says East Boston.
The death registration has her address as 129 Saratoga St.
I guess that would mean the county is Suffolk.

I don't have a Suffolk Co. probate index for anything that recent. The work that you need to consult is Elijah George, Editor, "Index to the Probate Records of the County of Suffolk, Massachusetts from the Year 1636 to and Including the Year 1893," 3 Volumes (Boston: Rockwell and Churchill, 1895).
