Speaking of research difficulties due to name changes - My Longbottum ancestor from CT changed his name and that of his sons to Bottum. One of his sons, my direct line ancestor, became succesful in business in MA and changed the name again to Botume, perhaps a more polite sounding name for a businessman. Needless to say, these name changes caused me problems for years until serendipity revealed the truth.

Try a Mc, Mac last name. Ours is Macfarlane, but can be McFarlane, and the last syllable lain, land. took me years to find citizenship papers.
