James and Martha (Ewing) Dudley were parents of Sarah Rose Dudley (born 15 Sep 1827, probably in Quebec; died 14 May 1891, Somerville, MA), who married William Alexander Irwin on 18 Dec 1849, apparently in Clarenceville, Iberville County, Quebec.

Is anyone familiar with these families?

DUDLEY--James Dudley was "a descendant of Gov. Thomas Dudley of MA."  My best guess from the Dudley genealogy is that he is the son or grandson of the James Dudley who was living 1794 in Unity, NH, and "near Lake Memphremagog in Canada East [Quebec] in 1817.

EWING--Haven't been able to name Martha's parents.

IRWIN--William Alexander Irwin, mason, (Lieut. 12th NY Cavalry1862-65), born about 1819, probably in Ireland, was age 52, living in Iberville County (with wife Sarah and 6 children of right names and ages) on the 1871 Census for Quebec.  [Sarah and the children had been in Easthampton, MA on the 1870 Census there.]  Records for them and their descendants show conflicting places of birth--Quebec; Plattsburg, NY; Easthampton, MA; or various towns in VT.  Sarah was listed as a widow starting in the early 1880's; was on the Special Schedule for Veterans & Widows of the 1890 Census.  --To add confusion--A William Alexander Irwin, mason, born 1814, was in the 1870 Census for Cleveland, OH, with wife Catherine & several children, died 1909 in Los Angeles, CA--and his widow Catherine appears along with Sarah as a "contest widow" on the index card at National Archives (but I was unable to locate the actual file)!
