Our latest online exhibit highlights one of the many collections of
family
papers which are carefully preserved in our manuscript department.
Family papers
can consist of genealogical research, photographs, letters, diaries, and
other
material collected over time.
The Crosby family papers were donated by Delinda Trowbridge whose
husband
Thomas is a descendant of Wallace William Crosby and Catherine Edwards
of
Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. The collection contains family pedigree charts,
some
genealogical research material, photographs, and other personal family
treasures. The better part of the collection consists of family
correspondence
written between 1874 and 1910.
Wallace W. Crosby was a mariner, primarily based out of Yarmouth,
N.S. Due to
the decline in the shipping industry in Nova Scotia and his wife’s
illness,
Wallace moved his family to New York City in 1888 and eventually settled
in
Brooklyn.
The Crosby family can trace their ancestry to Cape Cod and the Rev.
Thomas
Crosby (1634/35-1702), son of Simon Crosby, the immigrant. Thomas’
descendant,
Lemuel (1693-1743), settled in Barrington Township, Nova Scotia in 1762
with
other New England planters
