The article “Osmer Bingham: Counter-Migrant” in the February NEXUS, omitted the following sentence and references:
“Certain aspects of this migration have been treated with particular respect to Boston by Handlin (1959), who considered these native-born immigrants in comparison with the foreign-born, and Knights (1971), who dealt with the census data in more detail and was more concerned with the masses of people.”
Prof. Peter Knights’ book was “The Plain People of Boston”, published by the Oxford University Press in 1971. Prof. Knights has continued this study, and will be presenting some of the results of it in a talk, to be given at the Society on June 18, entitled “Boston as a Magnet: Migration Patterns in Nineteenth Century New England.”
