The ever popular Certificate in Genealogical Research is designed for the more serious amateur or aspiring professional (on campus and online offerings) and a new program called Genealogy Essentials, now available as an online class, is designed for the motivated amateur or hobbyist. Success in genealogical research involves commitment and perseverance, as well as a lively curiosity about the world and practical know-how. Whether one is looking to solve a medical mystery, trace property ownership, find lost friends and family, or write accurate historical narratives, the results of a genealogist’s work must be irrefutable.
The certificate program in Genealogical Research at Boston University’s Center for Professional Education focuses on current genealogical technologies and research methods that reflect the exacting standards and investigative best practices used by professionals in the field. Developed in collaboration with—and taught by—some of the premier genealogists in the country, BU’s Genealogical Research Program uses lectures, demonstrations, hands-on learning, workbook exercises, practice activities, and open discussions to assist motivated students in identifying and evaluating evidence, designing research strategies, and crafting quality reports.
The program leads to a certificate from Boston University, and is excellent preparation for researchers who seek certification through the Board for Certification of Genealogists®.
Available on campus or online, the Genealogical Research Program covers the following topics:
In addition, BU’s certificate program helps students develop a broader understanding of genealogical principles, techniques, and core competencies. A comprehensive curriculum adds depth to one’s background in librarianship, archival management, law, education, historical research, medicine, or biology, through proven research techniques.
Students learn directly from seasoned practitioners who are available beyond the classroom to answer questions, provide leads, and suggest resources. Participants engage with and learn from their peers, and also enjoy the valuable opportunity to meet and network with other distinguished members of the genealogical community. Prior to enrolling, students should have spent a significant amount of time searching for multiple generations of a family through record repositories and online sources, and documenting their results.
