Question: I recently received my third great grandfather's death certificate. The place of burial says 37 South B GD, he died in 1843. Can you please tell what cemetery it is? Boston Parks & Recreation and the archivist at City Hall couldn't help.
Answer: The cemetery reference you speak of is Tomb # 37, at the South Burying Ground (aka) South End Cemetery. It is located on Washington St., near East Newton St., South End. Inscriptions for the few gravestones in this cemetery are published in Gravestone Inscriptions and Records of Tomb Burials in the Central Burying Ground, Boston Common, and Inscriptions in the South Burying Ground, Boston. (Salem, Mass., 1917). Since tombs are generally numbered with the owner(s) name you may not find anything with your ancestors name upon it.
