Struggling to Attract Visitors, Historic Houses May Face Day of Reckoning
“We all know of Monticello and Mount Vernon, and they’re fabulous,” said Sarah Scarbrough, who is director of Virginia’s Executive Mansion. “But there are so many other homes in Virginia, and they’ve been struggling. The severity of the problem is alarming.”

So true, so true. I am on the board of a defunct church. We try to maintain the building as a historic site, but we scramble just to pay our liability insurance. We make it available for weddings and other gatherings, we host an annual service, we sponsor a Christmas Carol sing-along. I guess we fall into the surplus building category. It is on the National Register, but it is yearly struggle. The future looks bleak.
