Question:  In the 1861 Census of England I find my ancestor was a "Ponderater" for his occupation.  Can you explain what this might have been for a job?

Answer:  Your ancestor's job as a Ponderator was to be the inspector of weights and measures.  This occupation and other old occupations can be found online at:  http://www.worldthroughthelens.com/family-history/old-occupations.php
