Question: I am trying to determine if there might be business records for my ancestor John Locklin of England in the 19th century. He was a newspaper printer in Providence, R.I. in the 19th century.
Answer: At NEHGS we have a volume in our collection with the title - Printers and Printing in Providence 1762-1907 (Providence: Prividence Typographical Union, n.d.) [Call # RI/PRO/23 (old classification)]. This book has biographies and work histories of printers in the appendix. Included is one for your ancestor - JOHN J. LOCKLIN, born Lancashire, England, Feb. 8, 1854; learned printing at Journal Job office, beginning in 1869; initiated into Providence Union July 13, 1872; worked on Evening Press and in Journal office; now employed at latter office.
