Mason Membership Cards, Surnames M-P

(Updated Databases) Permanent link
Masons Database Update E - HNEHGS is pleased to announce the addition of 58,640 new records to the Grand Lodge of Masons in Massachusetts Membership 1733 – 1990 database. This important collection contains information on masons from original membership cards of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Massachusetts. Membership card data includes date of birth, place of birth, occupation, and residency information.

The Grand Lodge is the main governing body of Freemasonry within Massachusetts and once maintained Lodges in other jurisdictions overseas, namely Panama, Chile, the People's Republic of China (meeting in Tokyo, Japan), and Guantanamo Bay Naval Base, Cuba. The database includes information from all former jurisdictions of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, 1733-1990.

Founded in 1733, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts is the oldest Masonic lodge in the United States and the third oldest Masonic Grand Lodge in the world (the United Grand Lodge of England, 1717; the Grand Lodge of Ireland, 1725).

As of August 3, 2011, data is available for Masons with surnames "A" through "P". Additional surnames will be added on a regular basis. Upon completion, the database will contain 348,678 membership cards for those masons who died, dropped, or demitted before 1990.

Substantial support for the creation of this database was generously provided through the work of the dedicated NEHGS volunteer corps.

I was a little confused when I looked at the indexing...the year listed is that of the persons birth - not the year they became a Mason. It should probably be mentioned in your general blurb so that people can focus their search appropriately from the get-go.
Thanks - this is a great data base.

Just a clarification - the year they were admitted to and were dismissed from the Masons is also furnished on the card.

Dear Ms. Taylor:

Thank you for your message. I appreciate your comment. I will make a note that the year range for each card is inclusive from birth year to date death (or whatever the last field completed on the card is).

As there are 10 possible date fields on most cards and they are not uniformly completed, by any means, across all 348,678 cards, we choose to make each card searchable by the full date range of a person’s life.

1. Nativity (Birth Date)
2. Initiated Date
3. Passed Date
4. Raised Date
5. Membership
6. Demitted
7. Suspended
8. Dismissed
9. Reinstated
10. Deceased

Thank you and best regards,
Ryan Woods

Dear Mr. Ruggles:

Thank you for your message.

Do the cards you have for your relatives fall into the timeline and criteria of the material in this database? Namely, were your relatives members of a lodge in Massachusetts, do their surnames start with a letter A-P and were they demitted, suspended or deceased prior to 1990?

Thank you and best regards,
Ryan Woods
