Question:  Can you tell me what sort of details a typical 19th century New England undertaker would record on a client.

Answer:  I have seen some examples of early receipts from 19th century undertakers in probate cases.  If you are lucky enough to locate one the files or the ledger books of an undertaker may be very rewarding.  Generally a simple ledger book recording the name and the cost of the funeral is typical.  In some cases details regarding the location of the burial and the inventory of funerary items and services.
