Question: Recently when looking at the New Hampshire Town Record index at NEHGS on microfilm I was confused by an abbreviation. I was running late and did not have time to ask so I hope you can help. What does F.R. and M.R. mean in the index films?
Answer: The New Hampshire Town Records series contains Town and Vital Records recorded in the same volumes. The index abstracted names from vital records as well as tax lists, cattle marks, and town office appointments for example. F.R. = Family Record: This can be a birth, marriage, or death record of an individual of family group. M.R. = Marriage Record: This is the marriage intention or marriage record of a couple.
